Mood Match

A 3D replication of Griddy's Doughnuts from the Netflix Original series The Umbrella Academy.

The focus of this project was to gain a better understanding of what elements are necessary to create a "mood" in 3D, such as contrast, color, composition, and what the most effective strategies are for rendering a 3D environment.

Studying the Reference

Before creating the scene in Maya, it was essential to find the perspective to replicate the scene as accurately as possible. A color study was also done to understand the lighting and its relationship with the environment. The plate was blurred to eliminate distracting details and focus on the bigger picture.

Modeling

When tacking a scene like this, initially, it can seem overwhelming because there is a lot going on. As you can see, when you look closer, it's not bad at all since a lot of the items are replicated.

Compositing

Using Nuke was essential to blend the layers together and maintain control without sacrificing quality. In the end, I had two layers, beauty and volume. Not only did the layers give me more options for correcting, but they also decreased the overall render time.
